2005 OWAA Awards
J. Hammond Brown Memorial AwardThe J. Hammond Brown Memorial Award was initiated in 1966 as OWAA’s most prestigious recognition of a member “for devoted past service to the organization over a period of continuous years.” The award honors the memory of J. Hammond Brown, who served as OWAA president from 1941 through 1956 (with the exception of 1946-47). Previously, the Executive Committee and past recipients selected the honoree. Beginning this year, past recipients of the award constitute the selection committee. Before making a final selection, the selection committee consults with both the Awards Committee chair and the chairman of the board. The recipient of the 2005 J. Hammond Brown Memorial Award is William Jay Powell of Columbia, Mo. OWAA’s legal counsel, Powell attended the University of Missouri and received a bachelor’s degree in sociology before earning a law degree from the University of Missouri, cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, where he was an editor of the Missouri Law Review. Powell began providing legal expertise for OWAA in 1992. When presenting the award to Powell, Kay Morton Ellerhoff said, “One of those nominating him commented on the countless hours that he has spent solving contract problems and situations as OWAA legal counsel. Another commented that he had been a proactive counsel, rather than a passive one. Yet another commented that he is one of us: He is a writer, an outdoor communicator.” In nominating Powell for this award, one past recipient said, “This person is the best we’ve ever had at what he or she does.” OWAA appreciates Bill Powell’s enduring dedication, loyalty and guidance. Jade of Chiefs AwardThe Jade of Chiefs Award was established in 1958 as OWAA’s top conservation award. Though only OWAA members are eligible, the award is not presented by OWAA but by members of the current Circle of Chiefs. Before making a final selection, the selection committee consults with both the Awards Committee chair and the chairman of the board. Tenure and position in or service to OWAA are not criteria for the award. The Jade of Chiefs Award represents an affirmation of OWAA’s adherence to and support of the principles of conservation. In 1963 the Circle of Chiefs was designated OWAA’s Conservation Council. As such, it is OWAA’s conservation policy spokesperson. The award originally consisted of sterling-silver cuff links set with New Zealand jade. A pewter belt buckle inlaid with jade or a jade pendant along with a scroll-design walnut plaque are presently awarded. The recipient of the 2005 Jade of Chiefs Award is Scott Stouder of Idaho. Stouder is the Western field coordinator of Trout Unlimited’s (TU) efforts to protect roadless areas in Idaho. Before joining TU, Stouder was a full-time freelance writer. He was also the editor of Mule Deer magazine for three years. Stouder and his wife Holly Endersby care for their horses and pack mules on their property near Riggins, Idaho. Stouder is a passionate wilderness advocate and a lifetime hunter and angler. Excellence in Craft AwardThe Excellence in Craft Award was initiated in 1971 to honor an OWAA member “for outstanding effort in upholding the OWAA Creed and continued excellence in craft.” Recipients are selected by past Excellence in Craft Award recipients. Before making a final selection, the selection committee consults with both the Awards Committee chair and the chairman of the board. The recipient the 2005 Excellence in Craft award is Tom Huggler of Sunfield, Mich. A full-time freelance writer and photographer for numerous publications, Huggler has been writing outdoor copy since the 1960s. Huggler is a full-fledged sportsperson and an avid bird hunter, and his diverse outdoor experiences deepened and enriched his writing. In presenting the award to Huggler, David J. Richey said, “Our recipient’s bird dogs are well known to readers, and hunts have covered the length and breadth of North America and as far away as Europe. Readers revel in well-constructed paragraphs, writing that tugs at their heartstrings and gazing at beautiful photos.” Since his first conference in 1975 Huggler has chaired numerous committees and served many others. He was honored as Outstanding Board Member in 1989 and served as OWAA’s president in 1992-93. Jackie Pfeiffer Memorial AwardThe Jackie Pfeiffer Memorial Award honors the special qualities Jackie brought to OWAA and in the personal lives of members. It encourages everyone to exhibit these qualities in their lives. Recipients exemplify Jackie’s genuine warmth and radiance, goodwill, helpfulness, generosity and kindness to others, especially at OWAA’s conference. Candidates for the Jackie Pfeiffer Memorial Award must be members or spouses of members through the last conference. The selection committee is comprised of all previous recipients and Boyd Pfeiffer. Before making a final selection, the selection committee consults with both the Awards Committee chair and the chairman of the board. The recipient of the 2005 Jackie Pfeiffer Memorial Award is Ann Casada of Rock Hill, S.C. When presenting the award to Casada, Marty Vance said that she “perfectly reflects the warm personality of Jackie Pfeiffer.” Casada is the spouse of former member Jim Casada and has attended OWAA conferences since 1986. Casada has helped at the registration desk, set up the literature room, attended spouse tours and has been available for anything that she was asked to do. “She always has had a smile and even a shoulder to cry on,” said Vance. “She has a hug for anyone who needed it and a kind sense of humor.” OWAA appreciates the many contributions Casada has made to OWAA. Outstanding Board Member AwardDuring his term on the board of directors, Mike Cramond felt that outstanding board members should be recognized in a special way. In 1974 and 1975, he presented four board members with jade bolo ties as mementos of their exemplary service to OWAA. The board continued the bolo tradition until 1985. Now, a plaque is presented. Fellow board members select recipients. The recipient of the 2005 Outstanding Board Member Award is Tim Christie of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. This is Christie’s second time receiving this award, which he also accepted in 1998. Christie is active on numerous committees; committees he has served in recent years include Officer Nominating, Contests, Conference Program, Technology, Craft Improvement, Sections, Conference Review and Strategic Planning. Christie is a freelance photographer/writer who specializes in big game, bird life and hunting. He has made profound and lasting contributions to OWAA in his nearly 20 years of membership. |
