2006 OWAA Awards

At the closing night awards banquet in Lake Charles, several conference attendees received OWAA’s highest honors. The recipients included George Harrison, Ham Brown Award; Robert Lindholm, Jade of Chiefs Award; Chris Madson, Excellence in Craft Award; Doris Matheny, Jackie Pfeiffer Memorial Award; and Jack Ballard, Outstanding Board Member Award. Dave Richey was honored for his 2006 induction into the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame.

J. Hammond Brown Memorial Award

The J. Hammond Brown Memorial Award was initiated in 1966 as OWAA’s most prestigious recognition of a member “for devoted past service to the organization over a period of continuous years.” Ham Brown awardees are granted life membership. Past recipients constitute the selection committee. Before the final selection, the selection committee consults both the Awards Committee chair and the immediate past president.

The 2006 J. Hammond Brown Memorial Award winner is George Harrison of Hubertus, Wis. Harrison is the nature editor for Sports Afield, the field editor for National Wildlife and contributing editor for Birds and Blooms. He also has produced six PBS specials on wildlife and edited the book The Great American Outdoors. He served 10 years on OWAA’s board of directors and in 1981 was awarded the Outstanding Board Member Award. He also has held all officer positions, including president, a position he occupied from 1985 to 1986.

When presenting Harrison with the award, Bob Smith remarked, “He has been one of the great leaders of OWAA, and because of his own national reputation, he has helped in publicizing OWAA as the leading professional organization for outdoor communicators.” Within the organization, Harrison is known for his leadership talents and enduring dedication to OWAA.

Jade of Chiefs Award

The Jade of Chiefs Award was established in 1958 as OWAA’s top conservation award. Though only OWAA members are eligible, the award is presented not by OWAA but by members of the current Circle of Chiefs. Before making a final selection, the selection committee consults with both the Awards Committee chair and the immediate past president. Tenure and position in or service to OWAA are not criteria for this award.

The Jade of Chiefs Award represents an affirmation of OWAA adherence to and support of the principles of conservation. In 1963, the Circle of Chiefs was designated OWAA’s Conservation Council. As such, it is OWAA’s conservation policy spokesman. The award originally consisted of sterling silver cuff links set with New Zealand jade. A pewter belt buckle inlaid with jade or a jade pendant and a plaque are presently awarded.

The 2006 Jade of Chiefs recipient is Robert Lindholm of Lindsborg, Kan. Lindholm is not only a photographer but a writer, lawyer and environmental activist. As a lawyer, he joined the Missouri attorney general’s staff and became the agency’s expert on environmental law. He helped transform the Missouri-Kansas-Texas rail bed into the nation’s longest rails-to-trails project. He also was counsel to the state’s Clean Water Commission for more than 20 years and wrote state clean water legislation. Since his retirement in 1993, however, Lindholm has focused primarily on photography.

“His sensitive photography captures the essence of man and the land – old barns, hay rakes, the sweep of the prairie where he now lives in west-central Kansas, the shape and feel of springtime wildflowers,” remarked Scott Stouder, who presented Lindholm with the award. “Few … can press a camera release and reveal the soul of what they see. [Lindholm] does it repeatedly.” Ansel Adams lauded Lindholm’s work, and Lindholm has exhibited photographs for Congress and President Jimmy Carter. He is a past recipient of the Sierra Club’s Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography.

Excellence in Craft Award

The Excellence in Craft Award was initiated in 1971 to honor an OWAA member “for outstanding effort in upholding the OWAA Creed and continued excellence in craft.” Recipients are selected by past Excellence in Craft Award recipients. Before making a final selection, the selection committee consults with both the Awards Committee chair and the immediate past president.

The 2006 Excellence in Craft Award winner is Chris Madson of Cheyenne, Wyo. Madson is editor of Wyoming Wildlife as well as a freelance writer and photographer. With Madson at the helm, Wyoming Wildlife has won more than 50 awards from the Association of Conservation Information (ACI), including best magazine in the country in 1986, 1991, 1993, 2000 and 2001. Madson has won a plethora of awards for his writing, and both Ducks Unlimited and the Wyoming Wildlife Federation have honored him as “Conservation Communicator of the Year.” The Izaak Walton League of America gave him the William Vogt Award for Excellence in Communication.

Kay Morton Ellerhoff presented the award on behalf of Tom Huggler and said of Madson, “Nobody in this room so richly deserves this award as this year’s honoree. Adherence to the OWAA creed is part of the criteria for this award … in part it says ‘the trust that is imposed on me is subject to justification in my own heart and mind, and … the true test of my work is the measure of its public service.’ That description so fits our honoree that his picture should appear beside it.” Madson has served on ACI’s board of directors and as the group’s treasurer. He is currently serving his third term on OWAA’s board of directors.

Jackie Pfeiffer Memorial Award

The Jackie Pfeiffer Memorial Award honors the special qualities Jackie brought to OWAA and into the personal lives of members. It encourages everyone to exhibit these qualities in their lives. Recipients exemplify Jackie’s genuine warmth and radiance, goodwill, helpfulness, generosity and kindness to others, especially at conference. OWAA members and spouses are eligible. The selection committee consists of past recipients and Boyd Pfeiffer. Before making a final selection, the selection committee consults with both the Awards Committee chair and the immediate past president.

The 2006 recipient of the Jackie Pfeiffer Memorial Award is Doris Matheny of Greensburg, Pa. She and her husband, G. Edwin Matheny, are coordinators of the Nutty Irishman Bash, a longtime highlight of the annual OWAA conference. When presenting the award, Susan Sosin described Matheny as “a nurturing helper, a spark who brings people together, one who gives of herself whether someone asks for her help or just looks like she or he could use a friend. Her smile is warm and inviting.” OWAA members look forward to seeing Matheny at future OWAA conferences and the Nutty Irishman Bash.

Outstanding Board Member Award

Mike Cramford, during his term on the board of directors, felt that outstanding board members should be recognized in a special way. In 1974 and 1975, he presented four board members with jade bolo ties as a memento of service to OWAA. The board continued the bolo tradition until 1985. Now, a plaque is presented. Fellow board members select recipients.

The recipient of the 2006 Outstanding Board Member Award is Jack Ballard of Billings, Mont. Ballard joined OWAA in 1998 and since has served on numerous committees, including Board Nominating, Business Conduct Guidelines Review, Craft Improvement, Mentor, Contests, Contract Reform, Membership Recruitment and Officer Nominating. Ballard is a freelance writer and photographer and a college professor. His credits include Sports Afield, American Hunter, Colorado Outdoors, Paddler Magazine, VFW Magazine and Montana Magazine.

Ballard made substantial contributions to OWAA’s board during his term. OWAA appreciates his dedication and continued support of this organization, its members and its mission.
