George Harrison Honored with Outdoor Writers Association
of America’s Ham Brown Award
MISSOULA, Mont. – At its annual conference in Lake Charles, La., Outdoor
Writers Association of America (OWAA) announced the winner of its prestigious J.
Hammond Brown Memorial Award. The award is given annually to an OWAA member for
devoted past service to the organization over a period of continuous years.
This year’s recipient is George Harrison of Hubertus, Wis. Harrison is the field
editor of National Wildlife and contributing editor of Birds and Blooms. He was
the nature editor of Sports Afield for 25 years. He also has produced six PBS
specials on backyard wildlife and authored 13 books on backyard wildlife. He
served 10 years on OWAA’s board of directors and, in 1981, was given OWAA’s
Outstanding Board Member Award. He also received OWAA’s Jade of Chiefs Award in
1981 for his outstanding conservation work. He has held all OWAA officer
positions and served as the organization’s president in 1985-86.
The J. Hammond Brown Memorial Award was presented to Harrison by Robert C.
Smith, OWAA’s former legal counsel. Presenting Harrison with the award, Smith
remarked, “He has been one of the great leaders of OWAA, and because of his own
national reputation, he has helped in publicizing OWAA as the leading
professional organization for outdoor communicators.”
