Majority of OWAA Members Cover Hunting and Fishing;
Helping Americans Discover and Enjoy The Great Outdoors
MISSOULA, Mont. 9/21/2006 – Where do most Americans get their information
about the Great Outdoors and all you can do to enjoy it? On the eve of the 35th
annual National Hunting and Fishing Day, chances are they’ll get their outdoors
news from one of America’s outdoor writers. The Outdoor Writers Association of
America reports that more than the majority of its 1,300 communicators cover
hunting, shooting and/or fishing on a regular basis.
The 35th annual National Hunting and Fishing Day,
www.nhfday.org, which is scheduled for
Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, is a great time to do more than read or hear about the
outdoors, and many groups have events scheduled. Events are scheduled in 34
states and Canada. Some of OWAA’s supporting members listed as participants in
National Hunting and Fishing Day include the Missouri Department of
Conservation, National Wildlife Federation, Pheasants Forever and the U.S. Fish
& Wildlife Service.
A recent survey conducted by Responsive Management of Harrisonburg, Va., found
that approximately 75 percent of Americans approve of legal hunting and that 90
percent approve of recreational fishing. OWAA members cover a broad spectrum of
outdoor beats, including hunting and fishing. Members also communicate about
backpacking, adventure travel, kayaking, wildlife watching, mountain climbing,
skiing and more.
Familiar OWAA names include Mark Sosin, “Mark Sosin’s Saltwater Journal”; Wade
Bourne, host of “Ducks Unlimited TV”; B.A.S.S. founder Ray Scott, as well as
Homer Circle, Grits Gresham, Leonard Lee Rue III, M.R. James, Pat McManus and
Babe Winkelman.
OWAA is a nonprofit, international organization that was founded in 1927 by a
small group of hunting and fishing writers. Since then, the organization has
grown to approximately 1,700 outdoors communicators including corporate
partners.
Associations, government agencies and corporations support OWAA along with the
Boone and Crockett Club, Browning/U.S. Repeating Arms, Buck Knives, Bushnell
Outdoor Products, Canon USA, The Coleman Co., ESPN Outdoor-Bass-Great Outdoor
Games, Pure Fishing, Realtree Camo, Savage Arms Inc., Shimano American, Smith &
Wesson, Leatherman, Lowrance Electronics, National Marine Manufacturers
Association, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, The Sportsman Channel,
In-Fisherman, Toyota, Tracker Marine, Tri-Tronics Inc. Yamaha, Suzuki, Mercury
Marine, ZEBCO and many others.
Members gather beneath the OWAA banner at an annual conference to hone skills,
share philosophies, develop profitable business strategies and network with
peers, conservation policymakers and industry trendsetters. As a group, OWAA
continues to broaden its outlook and services to encompass all resource-oriented
outdoor activities.
OWAA Executive Director Kevin Rhoades said, “Whether Americans read or listen to
national outdoor media or local and regional media such as The Sportsman’s
Digest, Midwest Outdoor Guide, or Internet Web sites such as
www.TimTuckerOutdoors.com,
www.daybreakimagery.com
with its awesome wildlife photography,
www.FishingWorld.com
or any of thousands of such outdoor-oriented Web sites, we all celebrate the
outdoors and the many recreational opportunities afforded us.”
OWAA is “The Voice of the Outdoors,” and its national headquarters is located in
