Judd Cooney Honored with Top Award from Outdoor Writers Association of
America
Forty-two-year OWAA member and Past President Judd Cooney was recognized with
OWAA’s 2007 J. Hammond Brown Memorial Award, an honor bestowed to OWAA members
“for devoted past service to an organization over continuous years.”
Cooney, of Pagosa Springs, Colo., was honored at OWAA’s summer conference in
Roanoke, Va. He served as OWAA’s president from 1996-1997 and served three terms
on the association's board of directors.
Cooney’s career is based on his passion: hunting. Combine this with outdoor
photography and writing, Cooney has written numerous articles, shot myriad
magazine cover photos and has authored various books, including Decoying Big
Game and Advance Scouting for Whitetails.
When presenting Cooney with the award, longtime OWAA member Dave Richey said
Cooney is “a born storyteller.” Richey also noted Cooney’s dedication to OWAA
and a love of being outside.
“He is a man who has given often of himself to help OWAA grow and prosper,” said
Richey. His wife exposed another truth. “He is the only man I know who spends
15-18 hours daily trying to avoid a real job,” said Diane Cooney.
Outdoor Writers Association of America is the oldest and largest association of
professional outdoor communicators in the United States. It was organized in
1927 by members of the Izaak Walton League of America and includes professional
communicators dedicated to sharing the outdoor experience. OWAA’s professionals
include writers, photographers, outdoors radio- and television show hosts, book
authors, videographers, lecturers and artists. The association is headquartered
in Missoula, Mont.
