Outdoors Communicators Honored at OWAA Annual Conference

MISSOULA, Mont. – On June 20, 2006, at their annual conference in Lake Charles, La., the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA), The Voice of the Outdoors, announced the recipients of its annual awards: the J. Hammond Brown Memorial Award, the Excellence in Craft Award, the Jade of Chiefs award, the Jackie Pfeiffer Memorial Award and the Outstanding Board Member Award.

George Harrison of Hubertus, Wis., nature editor for Sports Afield, field editor for National Wildlife and contributing editor for Birds and Blooms, received the J. Hammond Brown Memorial Award. The award is OWAA’s most prestigious recognition of a member “for devoted service to the organization over a period of continuous years.”

Chris Madson of Cheyenne, Wyo., editor of Wyoming Wildlife and freelance writer and photographer, received the Excellence in Craft Award. The award honors an OWAA member “for outstanding effort in upholding the OWAA Creed and continued excellence in craft.”

Robert Lindholm of Lindsborg, Kan., photographer, writer, lawyer and environmental activist, received the Jade of Chiefs Award. The award is OWAA’s top conservation award and represents an affirmation of OWAA adherence to and support of the principles of conservation.

Doris Matheny of Greensburg, Pa., received the Jackie Pfeiffer Memorial Award. The award is given to an OWAA member or spouse who exemplifies Pfeiffer’s genuine warmth and radiance, goodwill, helpfulness, generosity and kindness to others, especially at the annual OWAA conference.

Jack Ballard of Billings, Mont., received the Outstanding Board Member Award.
