Book Contest
Sponsored by OWAA

Chief Judge Mike Levy had this to say about the contest: This year's book contest saw four entries stand head and shoulders above the others. Two were "how two" books, two were more in the line of nature studies. They all scored within one total point of each other. The judges would have preferred to give all four first-place awards, but contest rules require that these be ranked; so this was decided on whether or not a majority of judges placed one book ahead of the other, even though the point scores might have been identical. Thus, the winners should feel that they all are "first places," even though the contest rules won't let us do that.

First: "The Grail Bird" By Tim Gallagher. The discovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker, thought to be extinct for more than 60 years, makes for an exciting tale of the swamps. The history of the bird and what happened to its habitat throughout the swamps and bottoms of the southeast was compelling reading.

Second: "Successful Muzzleloader Hunting" by Peter Schoonmaker. This really accomplishes its goal and was a marvelously well- organized book that drew on a wealth of sources, unlike many "gun" books that tend to reflect the author's career and biases. Black powder shooting sports are on the rise, especially now that many states have special muzzleloader seasons. This book helps anyone interested do things correctly.

Third: "Complete Photo Guide to Fly Fishing" by Boyd Pfeiffer. Besides being extremely well produced and illustrated even an accomplished fly rodder will find a lot of useful tips and tricks in this one.

Honorable Mention: "The Wild Coast," by Curtis Badger. The author has ferreted out every pocket of remaining pristine seashore from Sandy Hook to South Carolina, tells you how to get to these preserves and what you might see there, as well as offering mini travelogues of the surrounding area. Much of it is still surprisingly rural and -- as yet -- condo-free. Badger wants to keep it that way and this modest guidebook might help in that effort.
