Free Workshop to Convene in Roanoke

The Roanoke, Va., conference will kick off with a free, half-day workshop, “How to Become an Outdoor Communicator,” on Saturday, June 16, from 8 a.m.-noon, at the Hotel Roanoke, headquarters for OWAA’s 80th annual get-together.

Workshop subjects will include the following:

  • The newspaper outdoor beat,
  • Following the big story for newspapers,
  • Outdoor radio shows,
  • Outdoor stories in mainstream magazines,
  • Working with state and federal agencies,
  • Outdoor photography,
  • Writing for travel publications,
  • Women in the hook-and-bullet world,
  • Self publishing your outdoor book.

Workshop presenters will include Virginia celebrities like Bruce Ingram and Mark Taylor, in addition to well-known outdoor communicators from other parts of the country, including Wade Bourne, Tony Dean, Susan Ebert, Tim Flanigan, Mark Freeman, Christina Larson, Joel Vance, Risa Weinreb-Wyatt and Pat Wray.

No experience is necessary! We all started with just interest and desire. Plenty of time will be allowed for questions and answers. Participants are welcome to attend the members-only conference as guests.

Interested? Register online NOW or call 406-728-7434.

Ninth Annual OWAA Golf Scramble

Register Now!

It’s time to dust off the clubs and get ready for the ninth annual OWAA golf scramble, to be held on Friday, June 15, at the Ashley Plantation Country Club, about 20 minutes from The Hotel Roanoke. Prizes will be awarded to golfers who master the course.

Ashley Plantation Country Club is the Roanoke Valley’s newest golf course. It features picturesque views and a beautiful Georgian- Style clubhouse. Ashley Plantation is a public 18-hole golf course with a private feel. For more information, contact Ashley Plantation Country Club, 919 Greenfield St., Daleville, VA 24083, 540-992- 4653. Visit www.ashleyplantation.com.

Registration costs $55, which includes the green fee, a cart, box lunch and prizes. Pairings will be made by the Scramble Committee, and we guarantee you will enjoy a professional looking (but probably not professional-golfing) group. Special pairing requests will be considered (but not guaranteed), so let us know if you wish to have someone join your team. Tee times begin at 11 a.m. Awards will follow with hors d’oeuvres at the Ashley Plantation pub.

Fill out the registration form and send your check or money order to OWAA Conference Planner Gail Brockbank, Premier Planning, P.O. Box 217, Helena, MT 59624, 406- 442-4141, 406-442-8018 (fax), gbrockbank@owaa.org.

We can’t guarantee you’ll score well, but we do guarantee a lot of laughs! If you have questions about the scramble, please contact Claude Bain at 757-491-5160 or mrcswt@visi.net. We look forward to seeing you there.

Roanoke Times Outdoors Page

Check out the Roanoke Times outdoors page. Read up-to-date information from Mark Taylor and Bill Cochran on what's going on in the Virginia outdoors. You won't want to miss Mark's blog, which can be quite funny at times - like the recent entry where he had video of himself getting hooked in the nose while flyfishing!

What Past Attendees Say...

"The OWAA conference in Madison, Wis., was one of the better conferences, ever. I enjoyed several of the seminars, I got a lot of radio interviews done, and I actually contracted a radio sponsor at Breakout Day. In my book, OWAA is alive and well!"

- Wade Bourne,
full-time outdoor writer/broadcaster/photographer
and host of “Ducks Unlimited TV” on OLN
